I recently went to my first Business Chicks event in Sydney. I’ve wanted to go for a while now but this one I could not miss even if it did mean getting up at stupid o’clock to be there!
You see I, like most women, are tired of feeling that in order to be beautiful or sexy we must look a certain way. Since having my second child I’ll admit that there are times when I look in the mirror and think nasty things about myself. It’s something I’ve never really done until then. My body confidence has changed, I know that these thoughts are unhealthy and I’m aware that my daughters watch every move I make and this is not how I want them to feel.
When I move my body and sit down to meditate I do it for joy. I do it because it makes me feel good. So why oh why are there sooooo many people out there promoting exercise as a way to change ourselves into what is deemed “better”. These messages say “we are not good enough as we are”.
When did exercise become about how we look and not how we feel?
The guest speaker was Taryn Brumfit she crowd funded a documentary called “Embrace” and, she has taken it global. The documentary is now available on iTunes and you can find out more about that here. My daughter who is 15 and my husband sat down with me to watch it and we were deeply moved. If you haven’t watched it, make it a priority and gather all the women and men in your life from teenagers up.
Gratitude
How ungrateful have we become?! This was one of Taryn’s points at the Business chicks breakfast. Since when is it OK to obsess over our triceps when there are people fleeing from war torn countries that have lost everything. This resonated deeply with me because my thoughts have been something like this every time I see a “get the body of your dreams” campaign.
How can we be so fixated on moving our bodies to create “the body of our dreams” when there are people out there that can’t move because they are in a wheelchair or mentally impaired?
Do you reckon they are worrying about their tricep tone for aesthetic reasons?
Get a grip on gratitude
A good friend once said to me “exercise is a privilege” and I couldn’t agree more. This misconception of beauty, “looking healthy” and being thin has to shove off and move over for what I’m calling “The joy movement”. The message has to spread and be heard by not just women but boys and men because we are all in this together, and we are all responsible for changing the world.
Please help me in spreading the joy.
