Meditation for wellbeing

September 1, 2015 By Melissa Wright

CPP_Meditation

Mediation, you’ve been told you should do it, you’ve read and understand the many benefits it can bring but you feel like you don’t have time. The truth is you do, its just that we put everyone else’s needs before our own. As little as ten minutes a day can really help to tame any negative thoughts that may be blocking you from achieving your health and weight loss goals and bring you into alignment with relaxation and inner peace.

Our adrenal glands handle our stress response and secrete hormones relative to the level of stress we are experiencing. When our adrenal glands are constantly in overdrive our bodies store fat and calories preparing for disaster. Basically, we are telling our body to be on high alert and to go into survival mode. When this happens, our sleep quality suffers, we become chronically fatigued, crave sweets and junk food and ultimately go down a slippery slope of weight gain and chronic stress. We suffer with mood swings, irritability, headaches and everything becomes a little harder to deal with. How can we possibly even consider an exercise and healthy eating regime when we feel like a bear with a sore head?!

Meditation improves your stress levels, sleep quality, concentration, libido and serotonin levels. It reduces anxiety and increases your ability to deal with life’s stressors: work, family and small children that refuse to go to bed when you want them too 😉 You know what I mean. The list is absolutely endless. If you are not achieving your health and fitness goals then starting with a short ten-minute meditation each day could really help to turn things around. Of course, you should always see your doctor or alternative health professional if you think there might be more to it.

Now, we all have ten minutes a day. Blaming time (lack of it)  is another procrastination tool that we all use. Prioritisation is key. You don’t make time, you carve it out.

Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz had the red shoes all along to transport her back home. All she had to do was click her heels three times to take her back “home”. The answers were inside of her all along, she just had to tap into them. Now of course if she had just got to the point and stopped getting sidetracked along the yellow brick road, blaming the witch for preventing her from getting to where she wanted to be, she would have been there sooner, no?  You too have the power and all you have to do is close your eyes, breath and count.

Take this simple time test

How often are you on your phone looking at Facebook, Instagram or emails out of pure habit and more than ten minutes go by?

Next time you feel the need to check your phone put the timer on and when you come out of your facebookcoma, check it. You will be surprised. Then ask yourself, what did I gain from that? Perhaps you read some very valuable information on meditation in which case, you win!

See my next post for a Beginners Meditation technique you can do anywhere.

The essence of Buddhism is - no self no problem. N The essence of Buddhism is - no self no problem. No centralised entity that life is happening to.This is a difficult concept to grasp when we live in a fast-paced society where more is more and everything that happens is happening to us.Sometimes that is the case, shit happens to us, but it’s the story we replay over and over again that makes us exhausted and trapped in the prison of our minds. The left hemisphere of the brain is constantly creating narratives to interpret reality which leads us to become identified with the stories of the mind. This is part of building our identity and the mask the world sees. Life unfolds with its passing experiences which causes us to grasp onto whatever may make us feel better in the moment. But, what happens when we remove the mask and take a step back to become the observer of our minds? The curious bystander that’s one step removed from the anxiety loop. This practice allows us to create space between ourselves and the emotions that arise, turning the intensity of those experiences into something more manageable, even humorous at times. This shift in perspective is at the heart of mindfulness practice, where the focus is on witnessing rather than identifying with our thoughts and feelings.I have recently been through something pretty shit that made me feel like I would never get out of the deep spiral of anxiety and depression I was in. Still, here I am with another door open and some fresh perspective due to actually making myself sit down and practice mindfulness. It wasn’t easy and it was very messy.I recently let my mindfulness practice slide when I felt like everything was going well—I even referred to my life as "ideal" a couple of months ago. The important lesson I learned is that, even when life seems stable, you never know when the rug will be pulled out from underneath you. When that happens, it’s crucial to be prepared. For me, that means maintaining my mindfulness practice, regardless of whether life is good, bad or messy.Rest in the comments...#mindfulness #mindfulnessinmotion #mindful #thepilatesescape #pilatesprettybeach
